Dr. Amon initially joined the Analysis and Predictions Group in 2003 for a two-year term appointment to study the imaging performance of thermal imaging cameras used by first responders. In 2005 she joined the Fire Fighting Technology Group as a permanent staff researcher.
Dr. Amon is the principal investigator of the thermal imaging project. This research supports the development of standardized thermal imager performance metrics, test methods, and manufacturer’s reporting practices to benefit the first responder community and is funded in part by the Department of Homeland Security, the United States Fire Administration, and the NIST Advanced Technology Program. Dr. Amon has also contributed to research on aircraft engine nacelle fire suppression.
In her dissertation work, Dr. Amon studied fine water mist fire suppression in microgravity and normal gravity. The culmination of this project was a series of premixed flame suppression experiments that were conducted onboard the Space Shuttle Columbia, on its last voyage.
Dr. Amon is a member of Xi Sigma Pi (Environmental Honors Society), and is active in the National Fire Protection Association Committee on Electronic Safety Equipment.
