Little if any fire suppression research has been conducted on the effectiveness of fire streams from manual hose lines during the past 50 years. Determining the effectiveness of a range of water application methods could have impact on the tactical decisions, equipment choices and water supply requirements that affect fire departments across the country. Specifically, the impact of fire fighting hose stream methods such as "straight stream", "fog" and compressed air foam (CAF) on "open" burning fires as well as on structure fires. A better understanding of the capabilities of different water application methods could also influence Insurance Services Office (ISO) ratings. The effectiveness of fire fighting hose streams is an important consideration in addressing firefighter health and safety.
